Isla Ixtapa

Erosion and instability

OBJECTIVE

Channel a river to prevent beach erosion and damage to buildings in extreme rain conditions due to discharge from the river to the sea. Find the water depth for a storm with a return period of 1,000 years to design the crossing bridge to the Isla Ixtapa development.

STRATEGY

Perform topobathymetric survey to generate a 3D model of the study area that encompasses the marine, coastal and upland areas. Investigation of intense rainfall in storm and hurricane conditions and generation of a mathematical model for storm simulation including wind, waves, and rain. Generate a hydrodynamic model with all the information to find the maximum water depth at the mouth.

WORK TOOLS

Single beam echosounder, transducer, high precision GPS, small boat, heavy duty computer and RTK surveying equipment.

RESULTS

The complete map of the area was obtained, storm events were modeled and the water straps along the river and at the mouth were obtained, the dimensions of the protections were also obtained to channel the river and withstand a discharge of water in storm conditions with a return period of 1,000 years.
